The full story is massive, and told only in episodes. The most popular episode tells the story of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Laksmana.

They are banished from their kingdom and wandering through the forest. One day, while hunting for deer, they are tricked by the evil Rawana, who kidnaps Sita. With the help of the mythical Garuda, and Hanuman - a white monkey general, Prince Rama eventually saves his wife.

Everyone in Bali loves this story, and even at tourist shows, there are sure to be Balinese in attendance. Hanuman is everyone's favorite character. Animals in Balinese plays are allowed more freedoms than human characters. This is true in both the dance and the performance.

As a result, Hanuman is usually performed by the most creative actor. I've seen actors play Hanuman as a comedian, as a swashbuckling adventure hero, and as a ladies man. Every performance is different. Because Rama and Laksmana are seen as idealized personifications of beauty, they are played by women. This often confuses tourists, who can't keep track of the characters. My advice is, don't worry about it. Read the plot line before the show, then forget about it. Once the show starts, watch Hanuman make his jokes, enjoy the costumes and dances, and listen to the gamelan. Try to see this dance at the Puri Saren Agung in Ubud. It's staged once a week, and it's much better than the performances at hotels in Kuta. Get there about 45 minutes early, bring something to drink and food to munch on, and sit on the carpet right in front of the stage.

Bali - The Legong

My favorite of the Balinese Dances, the Legong is a palace dance that features the prettiest young girls. The dancers used to be (and sometimes still are) hand picked by the local prince.

Gorgeous costumes and an array of eye, shoulder, hand, head, hip, and foot movements dazzle us.

No part of the costume or the dancer is wasted. Flowers jiggle. Balls swing. Material sways.

Eyes dart. And every dancer brings a unique perspective to the dance.

Don't misunderstand me.
The Legong is not slowly seductive, like the hula.
Nor is it an explosive celebration, like the Tahitian Dances.
And it's not stately, like the Japanese or Korean dances.

BALI - The Barong Dance

The Barong Dance is a powerful battle of good and evil.

I don't mean that metaphorically. The dance is actually a battle. The Barong costume is sacred, imbued with the soul of the Barong. It performs a kind of exorcism every time it dances.

The dance is, to us, an entertaining show; full of humor and action.
To the Balinese, also, it is an entertaining show. In addition, it is an opportunity to keep the cosmos in balance. The Barong battles the evil Rangda.

There is a story line to the Barong dance, but really, at it's heart, it's the Ultimate Grand Prix Wrestling match between two heavyweight champions who never go down.

This is one show that the Balinese always watch.

In addition, Barongs will do solo dances. The best Barong solo dance I've seen was in Ubud, during a festival. Two Barongs danced, trying to top each other, until one came out and did a comical version of the fan dance. This is particularly remarkable when you consider that the Barong has no hands. He had to handle the fan with his feet!

He picked it up, opened it, fanned himself with his left foot, fanned himself with his right foot, then continued his dance.

In one Barong story line, a princess is kidnapped by the forces of evil (backed by Rangda) and must be saved by the forces of good (backed, of course, by the Barong).

The Barong and Rangda do battle in a number of scenes building and building to a climactic scene when a number of warriors surround Rangda with knives and attack him.

Rangda uses magic to force the warriors to turn their knives on themselves.

This is when things get interesting.
It's hard to tell what is going on here. We can see the performers stabbing themselves, sometimes very hard with these knives, but the Barong's magic protects the warriors.

At the tourist shows, performed everyday, we can see that some performers are not stabbing so hard. However, there are those who seem to reach a state of fervor, or 'trance'.

These guys really get into it, but don't draw blood. As the show ends, some don't stop. Only when a priest intervenes with holy water do they stop.
At festivals, it's not uncommon for near-riots to break out, and for audience members to go into trance states.

Real, professional anthropologists and psychologists have spent time trying to explain this, and they've failed.

So I won't bother trying.
In the end, neither side wins. They fight to a draw, because there is no good without evil. Both are needed in the Balinese Universe, for balance. It is a great show, though...

Is Money Wasted with Medical Travel Insurance?

Sometimes, insurance policies can be very confusing; maybe because they come in different types. The different types determine the insurance coverage and in the case of traveling abroad, you need to secure travel medical insurance.

This type of travel insurance covers those expenses that have something to do with medical reasons. You see, when you go to a different place, you can encounter changes in climate, weather, surroundings, and many others. This often causes illnesses and diseases that require immediate medical attention. You can then acquire certain medical costs, dental emergencies, and surgical costs which can be very costly especially if you're in a foreign country.

If you're a wise individual, you will focus more on how you're going to handle your expenditures just in case there is an emergency situation that involves medical attention. Try to imagine yourself without any travel medical insurance and then you suddenly get sick. You will find yourself paying as high as $50,000 for emergency conditions. That is big money you're throwing so if you don’t want to end up wasting money on some emergency situations abroad, make sure that you secure a travel medical insurance first before you leave your home country.

If you have travel medical insurance, you will not need to pay for the emergency situations because the insurer will settle the expenses pertaining to the emergencies. You can't predict what's going to happen while you're walking in the park or simply eating in a restaurant abroad. Hence, you must be prepared at all times.

When you try to conduct a search online, you will be able to obtain a long list of insurance providers. Some of them are just new in the industry while the others are already well-established. A good thing though is that with a lot of insurance firms competing with each other, you can easily find one that offers high rates for a settlement amount.

Now, some firms insist that clients pay different amounts of premium pertaining to the insurance. Others consider the age of the individual applying for the travel insurance as it may be the basis of the policy's amount.

All insurance firms make advertisements regarding their insurance policies like the multi-trip travel insurance policies. Even if there are hundreds of advertisements out there, the purchase of the policy will still depend on the individual's decision.

Most insurance firms have official websites where they can advertise to the world their insurance policies and their services. This will make it easier for them to reach millions of customers from different places. This is also a great advantage on the part of the customers because they get to enjoy the discounts and savings because most online insurance firms sites maintain low overhead costs.

When there are so many insurance firms competing for travel medical insurance, you can expect to find good offers in terms of the coverage. So just be diligent in your search because in no time, you can surely find a good insurance provider that can sell you an outstanding travel medical insurance that you can afford.

If you haven't purchased any travel medical insurance yet, now is the time to look for the right one online. Don’t waste your money by traveling without any insurance at all. Secure your life, secure your travel – get a travel medical insurance. This is not a waste of money and that is a guarantee.

Are you ready to Travel for the Holidays?

Going to another country for the holidays is a great way to learn about a new culture. In some instances the travel is to visit family that is located there instead of just for a vacation. Regardless of the reason why you are traveling to another country during the holidays, you need to make sure you are prepared for the trip.

For most countries you are going to need a passport with a photo ID. This will allow you to remain in the country for a specified amount of time. Generally, this time frame is from 30 days to 90 days. You can take your passport photo at any post office, but it is going to take several weeks to get it back. There is an expedited option and it is very expensive. If you wait until the holiday time to obtain your passport it is going to take much longer, even for the expedited option.

Make sure you keep your passport and other pertinent travel documents in a safe place. You don’t want them to get lost or stolen as this can delay your travel plans. Make sure you arrive early for your flight so that you can get through all of the necessary inspections and verifications in plenty of time.

There may be vaccinations that you are required to get and others that you are encouraged to get before you can travel to certain countries for the holidays. Plan ahead and find out what these vaccinations are and then schedule appointments with your doctor. Some of the required vaccinations have to be given in a series with a specific amount of time between each shot in the series to be administered. Therefore you don’t want to wait until close to your time of travel to take care of this matter.

Depending on where you are traveling, you may have to deal with a different type of currency. You can get your money exchanged at your local bank before you leave. This will save you time trying to take care of it when you arrive in the other country for the holidays. There may be language differences as well that you need to take into consideration.

Be careful what you pack when you travel for the holidays. Most modes of transportation have strict guidelines on the size of your luggage, how many bags each person can have, and the weight guidelines. They will be enforcing these restrictions during the holidays because of the volume of people traveling. You don’t want to have to get rid of some of your items or purchase more bags at the gift shop.

Make sure you are aware of how much luggage you have for your return trip as well. While it can be fun to purchase items while you are there, think about how you will get them back. It may be a good idea to pack an extra bag in your luggage when you go so you can fill it up for the trip back. Another idea is to have items shipped but that can be quite expensive.

While traveling to another country for the holidays can be exciting, you need to remember that their customs may be significantly different than your own. Be respectful of such differences to avoid any conflicts while you are in that country. It is a good idea to read about the various customs that will be in place so you won’t reach them by accident.

BALI

Bali Island, the perfect holiday destination for all ages offers something for everyone. Bali offers not just various customs but also various "adrenalin pump" parks. Many exciting amusements are available in Bali, with something new opening all the time. The number of offshore and inland attraction are on the rise because many tourists want them. This tropical paradise has a unique blend of modern tourist facilities combined with wonderful shopping and a rich past and heritage. After white water rafting that has gained popularity in Bali, comes offshore rafting or ocean rafting. The more adventurous sort of amusement has now become an alternative sport for tourists. Meanwhile white water rafting is still a popular activity with trips on Ayung, Telaga Waja, Unda Rivers, etc. The tourists can refresh their mind by watching beautiful scenery along the route. Those are not enough, some of the best surfing beaches in the world can be found on the western side of the island whilst conversely the eastern side is a wonderful haven for families, with beautiful white sand beaches and gentle seas.

Bali is small island, just 140 Km by 80 Km and lies between Java, the most highly populated and influential of all the islands, and Lombok, one of the quieter and moderately slower paced islands. Like many islands, Bali has developed a world of its own. It not only captures what is special about Indonesia but also has a uniqueness of its own.

The culture of Bali is unique. People say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. The Balinese people are proud of having preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, the dominant religion throughout Indonesia. This is still reflected in days to day life and can be seen in the numerous ceremonies, Balinese festivals and magnificent temples and palaces. The Balinese are skilled artisans, particularly in woodcarving and in fashioning objects of tortoiseshell and of gold, silver and other metals. The Balinese are noted for their traditional dance, the distinctive music of the gamelan and for their skills in weaving cloth of gold and silver threads, Songket, as well as for embroidering silk and cotton clothing. Stone and woodcarvings, traditional and modern paintings and intricately designed jewelry in gold and silver are readily available in shops and galleries throughout the island.

As for recreation, there is no shortage of options. Nature walks, horseback riding, diving, surfing - even bungy jumping and white water rafting - await the adventurous here.

Geographically
Bali is volcanically active and extravagantly fertile. Bali has an area of 5620 sq km, measures approximately 140 km by 80 km and is just 8 degrees south of the equator. Mount Agung known as the 'mother mountain' is over 3000 meters. South and north of the central mountains are Bali's fertile agricultural lands. The southern region is a wide, gently sloping area where most of Bali's abundant rice crop is grown. The south-central area is the true rice basket of the Island. The northern coastal strip is narrower, rising more rapidly into the foothills of the central range, but the main export crops, coffee, copra and rice, are grown here. Cattle are also raised in this area.

Climate
Bali has a climate that is tropical all year. The average temperature hovers around 30 degrees Celsius year-round. There are dry and wet seasons -dry from April to September and wet from October to March- but it can rain at any time of year and even during the wet season rain is likely to pass quickly. In general May to August are the best months in Bali. At that time of year the climate is likely to be cooler and the rains lightest. Around the coast, sea breezes temper the heat and as we move inland we also move up so the altitude works to keep things cool. It can get very cool up in the highlands and a warm sweater can be a good idea in mountain villages like Kintamani or Bedugul.

Population
With 2.5 million people, Bali is a very densely populated island. The population is almost all Indonesian, with the usual small Chinese contingent in the big towns, a sprinkling of Indian merchants, plus a number of more or less permanent visitors amongst the Westerners in Bali.

Culture
Each stage of Balinese life is marked by a series of ceremonies and rituals known as Manusa Yadnya. They contribute to the rich, varied and active life the average Balinese leads. There are ceremonies for every stage of Balinese life but often the last cremation ceremony is the biggest. A Balinese cremation can be an amazing, spectacular, colorful, noisy and exciting event. In fact it often takes so long to organize a cremation that years have passed since the death. During that time the body is temporarily buried. Of course an auspicious day must be chosen for the cremation and since a big cremation can be very expensive business many less wealthy people may take the opportunity of joining in at a larger cremation and sending their own dead on their way at the same time. Brahmans, however, must be cremated immediately. Apart from being yet another occasion for Balinese noise and confusion it's a fine opportunity to observe the incredible energy the Balinese put into creating real works of art which are totally ephemeral. There are a lot more than a body gets burnt at the cremation. The body is carried from the burial ground (or from the deceased's home if it's an 'immediate' cremation) to the cremation ground in a high, multi-tiered tower made of bamboo, paper, string, tinsel, silk, cloth, mirrors, flowers and anything else bright and colorful we can think of. The tower is carried on the shoulders of a group of men, the size of the group depending on the importance of the deceased and hence the size of the tower. The funeral of a former rajah high priest may require hundreds of men to tote the tower.

LAMPUNG

Lampung province is located at the extreme of south of Sumatra is overlooked, over flown by most tourists. "North Sumatra" consists of 5 islands or island groups: Hinako Islands, Nias, Telos and 2 other obscure island groups to the north. North Sumatra receives similar swell to Mentawais and enjoys its peak swell season from May to September. Despite Indonesia's reputation for hollow lefts, in North Sumatra right-handers are slightly more prevalent. While Lagundri Bay at Nias has been surfed for decades, it is the more obscure rights like Bawa (a Sunset-like right bowl that holds up to 15 feet) and Treasure Island (a long, hollow, mechanical right peeling for 200 meters) that have attracted the attention of late. Throw a mix of hollow and bowl lefthanders into the picture like Asu, Afulu, the Machine, and many more obscure rights and lefts.

In contrast to the small island of Bali, North Sumatra province is large with one of the biggest lakes in the world, Toba Lake, at its navel. The continuous mountain of Bukit Barisan, which extends from Aceh at the tip of Sumatra island to Lampung at the bottom of the island, guards the province on the west side, providing home for thick, tropical jungles and lush vegetations. As you go down the western mountains towards the beaches of the east, mountain streams, strong rivers, and gorgeous waterfalls will accompany you.

Along the length of this province crosses Bukit Barisan Mountains with peaks of numerous volcanoes. The land has thick virgin forests, lush vegetation, rice fields, mountain streams, rivers, waterfalls and sandy beaches. It has a rich flora and fauna. An abundance of birds, butterflies, buffaloes, deer, mouse deer, orangutans and many other export commodities make North Sumatra one of the richest provinces in Indonesia, as it produces more than 30 % of Indonesia's exports. The province offers the visitors, especially nature lovers, beautiful tropical panoramas, terraced rice fields, blue mountains, jungle covered hills, white sandy beaches, music, dance and folk arts.

Relative to Bali, North Sumatra has very heterogeneous ethnic groups, and thus, cultures. The people of the eastern coasts, also known as the Malays (Melayu) have markedly different traditions and culture from Batak highlanders who live around Toba Lake and Samosir Island. Further south, the Mandailings and Angkolas, and Nias Island, have yet more flavors of traditions and culture. Besides them, there are several ethnic groups who live in Medan and other towns of North Sumatra. Other Indonesian tribes like Acehnese, Minangkabau, Javanese, etc also live in many parts here. Each of the mentioned tribes as well as the ethnic groups has its own dialect, religion, beliefs, traditional customs, etc. Arts and cultures make this region, a paradise for social scientists. Among the ancient Indonesian cultures, which can be seen at Samosir Island, are the centuries old tombs of Batak Toba kings and a stone-table with its benches, where the Siallagan chiefs formerly held meetings.

Geographically North Sumatra province has 70,787 sq km width.
